What does loyalty mean as a core value?
Loyalty as a core value means standing by the people you’re committed to, staying on their side and keeping faith with them when things go wrong or leaving would be easier.
You find out who someone is when things go wrong, and loyalty is about being the one who stays. It’s standing up for a colleague who has been blamed unfairly, sticking with a friend through a bad year, keeping faith with a partner or a team when leaving would be easier. If loyalty ranks high for you, disloyalty stings more than almost anything else, including incompetence. Fidelity, in all its forms, feels like part of who you are.
What does loyalty look like in practice?
- You defend an absent friend when others start picking them apart.
- You stay with an employer or client through a rough patch, even with a better offer on the table.
- You keep confidences for years, even after a friendship has cooled.
- You back your team in public and raise disagreements with them in private.
- You remember who stood by you when you were struggling, and you return it.
When is loyalty overplayed?
Loyalty goes wrong when it stops asking questions. You cover for someone who is behaving badly, stay in a relationship or organisation that is harming you, or treat honest criticism of your group as betrayal. Leaders with unexamined loyalty can build teams where nobody raises concerns. Healthy loyalty is compatible with telling people hard truths, and sometimes it requires it. One way to check is to picture the conversation you’ve been avoiding with them, and ask what a loyal friend would say.
Often confused with
Loyalty vs Commitment
Commitment is sticking to what you’ve signed up for, whether a goal, a project or a promise. Loyalty is directed at people, and shows most when they’re struggling.
Loyalty vs Reliability
Reliability means people can count on you to deliver. Loyalty means they can count on you to stay on their side, even when they haven’t delivered.
Loyalty vs Trust
Trust is your willingness to rely on others. Loyalty is what you give back: staying faithful to people, sometimes even after trust has been tested.
Questions to sit with
- Who are you loyal to right now who might not deserve it, and what keeps you there?
- When did loyalty last stop you telling someone a truth they needed to hear?
- Which people would you stand by even if it cost you professionally?
