Reliability
Doing what you said you would
Also covers Dependability, Punctuality and Timeliness
What does reliability mean as a core value?
Reliability as a core value means doing what you said you would, when you said you would, so people can build their plans around you without checking.
If you say Thursday, it arrives on Thursday. Reliability is the unglamorous habit of doing what you said you would, when you said you would. You’re on time, you reply when you promised to, and people stop needing to check. It matters to you partly because you know how much energy it costs everyone when things don’t turn up. Praise rarely comes. The reward is that others build their plans on you without a second thought.
What does reliability look like in practice?
- You arrive five minutes early and feel uneasy if you’re running late.
- You send the document by the deadline you gave, even if it means a late night.
- You write down small promises, like sending someone a contact, so none of them slips.
- You warn people as soon as a commitment looks at risk.
- You pick your friend up from the airport at 6am because you said you would.
When is reliability overplayed?
Reliability can make you the person everyone leans on and nobody checks on. You say yes to more than you can carry, then keep every promise at the expense of sleep, health or your own priorities. And because you so rarely let people down, renegotiating a commitment can feel like failing. Healthy reliability makes fewer promises, keeps them well, and treats an early warning as part of being dependable. It can help to practise on something small: move one low-stakes deadline this week, and notice how little changes.
Often confused with
Reliability vs Integrity
Integrity asks whether your commitments reflect what you believe in the first place. Reliability is about keeping them, whatever they are.
Reliability vs Commitment
Commitment is sticking with people and promises over the long run. Reliability is the day-to-day follow-through: turning up on time and delivering what you said.
Reliability vs Consistency
Consistency is doing things the same way over time. Reliability is specifically about honouring what you’ve promised other people.
Reliability vs Trust
Trust is the two-way relationship of relying on others and being relied on. Reliability is one of the behaviours that earns it.
Questions to sit with
- What have you agreed to this week that you’d quietly like to cancel, and what’s stopping you saying so?
- Who can always rely on you, and what has that reliability been costing you?
- How do you react when someone else is late or misses a deadline, and what does that reaction say about you?
