Consistency

Doing things the same way, every time

What does consistency mean as a core value?

Consistency as a core value means doing things the same way and to the same standard every time, so the people around you always know what to expect.

You like knowing what to expect, and you like other people being able to expect the same from you. The same process for every client, the same bedtime routine, the same standard on a Friday as on a Monday. Consistency as a core value is about trust built through repetition. You find it unsettling when rules shift depending on who’s asking or what mood someone is in, and you’re happy to stick with a slightly imperfect method that everyone understands.

What does consistency look like in practice?

  • You use the same checklist for every project, even the small ones.
  • You apply the same rules to your children, whichever of them is asking.
  • You keep your exercise, writing or practice routine going through busy weeks.
  • You give feedback the same way to the team member you like most and the one you find hardest.
  • You notice when a brand, a manager or a friend says one thing and does another.

When is consistency overplayed?

Doing things the same way can harden into doing them the same way after they’ve stopped working. You may resist improvements because they break the pattern, treat very different situations identically, or feel thrown when life needs a new approach. Colleagues can read steadiness as inflexibility. Held well, it stays consistent in principles and standards while remaining willing to change methods. A useful test is to take one routine and ask whether it still serves you, or whether changing it just feels risky.

Often confused with

Consistency vs Reliability

Reliability is keeping the commitments you make to others. Consistency is doing things the same way every time, which makes you predictable even where nothing was promised.

Consistency vs Structure

Structure is the framework or routine itself. Consistency is sticking to it, every time, including when nobody is checking.

Consistency vs Fairness

Fairness sometimes means treating people differently to give each an even hand. Consistency means treating them the same, which usually looks fair and occasionally falls short.

Questions to sit with

  1. Which routine have you kept long after it stopped helping?
  2. Where do you treat people the same when they actually need something different?
  3. How would someone who works with you describe what they can always count on from you?
