Self-respect

Treating yourself as worthy

What does self-respect mean as a core value?

Self-respect as a core value means treating yourself as someone who deserves decent treatment, and showing it in the standards you keep, the limits you set and how you speak to yourself.

Self-respect shows up most clearly in what you won’t do. You won’t stay where you’re belittled, you won’t abandon your standards to be liked, and you won’t talk to yourself in a way you’d never talk to a friend. It’s a quiet sense that you deserve decent treatment, including from yourself, and it gives you a kind of dignity under pressure. People who hold it rarely think they’re better than anyone. They simply don’t accept being treated as less.

What does self-respect look like in practice?

  • You leave a job, friendship or relationship where you’re consistently disrespected, even when leaving is hard.
  • You say no to requests that would compromise your standards, without over-explaining.
  • You look after your health and sleep because you think you’re worth the effort.
  • You refuse to join in with humiliating someone, even when it would get a laugh.
  • You speak up calmly when someone takes credit for your work.

When is self-respect overplayed?

Self-respect can harden into pride. Every slight feels like an attack on your dignity, apologising feels like losing, and asking for help becomes almost impossible. You might walk away from situations that really needed patience, or hold a grudge to prove a point. The secure version doesn’t need constant defending. It can admit mistakes and still draw a clear line when something really does cross it. A useful habit is to wait a day before responding to a slight, then decide whether the line was actually crossed.

Often confused with

Self-respect vs Confidence

Confidence is belief in your abilities. Self-respect is belief in your worth, and it holds even when you’re not sure you can do something.

Self-respect vs Respect

Respect is honouring the worth and boundaries of others. Self-respect turns the same standard inwards, and the two tend to strengthen each other.

Self-respect vs Honour

Honour is about living up to a code that others can see. Self-respect is more private: how you treat yourself and what you won’t accept, whether or not anyone is watching.

Questions to sit with

  1. What are you currently tolerating that you’d tell a friend not to put up with?
  2. When did you last compromise a standard to be liked, and how did you feel afterwards?
  3. Where does protecting your dignity make it harder to admit you were wrong?
