What does hard work mean as a core value?

Hard work as a core value means believing that good things come from steady effort, and taking pride in doing a job properly and earning what you have.

Effort means something to you. Whether it was modelled by a parent, learned on a building site or earned in a demanding profession, you believe good things come from graft and that there’s dignity in doing a job properly. You respect people who roll their sleeves up, and you notice when others coast on talent or luck. Long hours are a side effect. What you care about is the feeling that you’ve earned what you have.

What does hard work look like in practice?

  • You arrive early or stay late when a job needs finishing, without making a show of it.
  • You do your share of the unglamorous tasks, even when someone junior could.
  • You put the same effort into a school fundraiser or a house move as into paid work.
  • You praise your children for trying hard more than for being clever.
  • You feel uneasy at the end of a day when you haven’t done much.

When is hard work overplayed?

Hard work overplayed turns into overwork, and it can quietly become the only way you know to feel worthwhile. Rest starts to feel like laziness, you judge colleagues who work differently, and effort becomes a substitute for asking whether it’s the right work at all. Health and relationships often pay the bill. In balance, it works hard on what matters, rests without guilt and respects a smart shortcut. One way to keep it in check is to ask, before a late night, whether this is the right work or simply more work.

Often confused with

Hard work vs Persistence

Persistence is keeping going over months or years when progress is slow. Hard work is the effort you put in today, whether the goal is near or far.

Hard work vs Productivity

Productivity is about output relative to effort. Hard work values the effort itself, and can be proud of a long day even when results came slowly.

Hard work vs Dedication

Dedication is devotion to a person, cause or craft. Hard work is the graft that devotion often requires, but you can work hard at things you don’t feel devoted to.

Questions to sit with

  1. Where are you working hard on something that no longer deserves your effort?
  2. What would you think of yourself if you did less and achieved the same?
  3. Who taught you that effort matters, and which parts of their lesson would you now update?
