Also covers Boldness, Bravery, Daring, Fearlessness and Valour

What does courage mean as a core value?

Courage as a core value means doing what you believe is right while you’re still afraid, whether that’s speaking up, owning a mistake or taking a real risk.

Courage usually arrives with fear attached, and if it’s one of your values you probably know that from experience. The moments that count involve a racing heart and a choice: say the uncomfortable thing or stay quiet, step forward or wait for someone else. You want to be the kind of person who chooses the first. Bravery can look dramatic from the outside, but most of the time it’s small and private: sending the email, asking the question, owning the mistake.

What does courage look like in practice?

  • You raise the concern in the meeting that everyone else discusses in the corridor afterwards.
  • You tell a friend something difficult they need to hear, knowing it may strain the friendship.
  • You apply for the role, start the business or move country despite real doubts.
  • You admit in front of others when you’ve got something wrong.
  • You step in when someone is being treated unfairly, even if you don’t know them.

When is courage overplayed?

Boldness without judgement becomes recklessness. You may take on fights that don’t need fighting, confront where a quieter conversation would work better, or treat caution in others as cowardice. Some people start chasing the feeling of being brave and lose sight of the outcome that needed it. The healthier version picks its moments. Before your next stand, you could ask what’s really at stake and whether a quieter conversation would get there first.

Often confused with

Courage vs Risk-taking

Risk-taking is seeking out uncertain outcomes, often for the thrill or the upside. Courage is doing what’s right when it frightens you, and the right thing is sometimes the cautious one.

Courage vs Resilience

Resilience is getting back up after a setback. Courage is stepping forward before you know how it will turn out.

Courage vs Integrity

Integrity is acting in line with your principles. Courage is what it takes to keep doing so when there’s a real cost.

Questions to sit with

  1. What have you not said at work this month because you were afraid of the reaction?
  2. Which decision are you waiting to feel brave enough to make?
  3. When did you last mistake stubbornness or bravado for courage?
