Effectiveness

Getting the right results

Also covers Efficiency

What does effectiveness mean as a core value?

Effectiveness as a core value means focusing your effort on the work that actually changes the outcome, and judging it by the results it achieves.

Results are what impress you. If effectiveness is a core value, you keep asking whether the effort is landing: is this meeting changing anything, is this report being read, is there a better route to the outcome? You enjoy cutting waste and finding the shorter path, though efficiency is only ever a means. What satisfies you is the right result without unnecessary fuss, whether that’s a project delivered or a family holiday that actually worked for everyone.

What does effectiveness look like in practice?

  • You cancel a recurring meeting once it stops producing decisions.
  • You ask “what does good look like?” before starting a piece of work.
  • You drop a task from your list when you realise it won’t change the outcome.
  • You judge a new process by whether results improved.
  • You plan the weekly shop around meals so less food gets thrown away.

When is effectiveness overplayed?

Focusing only on outcomes can make you hard to work with. You cut the conversation that was inefficient but built trust, skip the step that seemed pointless until it wasn’t, and treat people’s feelings about change as friction to be removed. Some of the most valuable things in a team or a family don’t show up as results for years. The steadier form defines the right result widely enough to include relationships, learning and the long term. One thing you could try is adding a line to your next project review: what did this do for the team?

Often confused with

Effectiveness vs Productivity

Productivity is about output: getting a lot done. Effectiveness asks whether it was the right work, so doing less can be more effective.

Effectiveness vs Competence

Competence is being able to do the job well. Effectiveness is about whether the job achieved what it was meant to.

Effectiveness vs Performance

Performance is how well you deliver against a standard or target. Effectiveness questions the target itself: is this the result that actually matters?

Questions to sit with

  1. Which regular activity in your week would you struggle to justify by its results?
  2. What have you cut as inefficient that was quietly holding something together?
  3. How do you define the right result at home, and would your family define it the same way?
