Craft

Skilled making, done with care

What does craft mean as a core value?

Craft as a core value means caring about how things are made, putting skill and attention into the details so the finished work is well made, whoever ends up noticing.

How something is made matters to you as much as what it does. A well-built spreadsheet, a joint that fits, a sentence that reads cleanly, a garden laid out with thought: you can tell when care went in, and you want your own work to carry that mark. When craft is one of your core values, you enjoy the doing as much as the finishing. Design choices other people would never notice are exactly the ones you lose sleep over, because you’d know.

What does craft look like in practice?

  • You redo a slide’s layout because the alignment is slightly off, even though the content is fine.
  • You choose your tools carefully and look after them.
  • You study how someone better than you did it before starting your own version.
  • You’d happily make fewer things if it means making them well.
  • You notice the stitching, the typography or the joinery in things other people use without a thought.

When is craft overplayed?

Care can become perfectionism. Deadlines slip because a piece isn’t quite right yet, colleagues feel their good-enough work is being quietly judged, and you struggle to hand over tasks because nobody else does them your way. You may also polish things that don’t need polish. Healthy craft knows where care makes a difference and where it’s indulgence. A useful test: would the person using this notice or value the extra hours, or are they mostly for you?

Often confused with

Craft vs Mastery

Mastery is reaching deep expertise in a field. Craft is the care you put into the making, whatever your level, and a beginner can have plenty of it.

Craft vs Quality

Quality is the standard of the finished result. Craft is about the process and the attention that goes into making it.

Craft vs Creativity

Creativity is about new ideas. Craft can happily make the same thing for the hundredth time, as long as it’s made well.

Questions to sit with

  1. Where are you spending craft on something that only needed to be finished?
  2. What did you make recently that you’re genuinely proud of, and what went into it?
  3. Who have you stopped delegating to because their work doesn’t meet your standard, and what has that cost them?
