Recognition
Having your work seen and acknowledged
Also covers Popularity
What does recognition mean as a core value?
Recognition as a core value means wanting your contributions to be seen and acknowledged by people whose opinion matters to you, and giving others the same acknowledgement.
It matters to you that good work is seen. Recognition means having your contribution noticed and acknowledged, by a boss, peers, an audience or the people you love. Being seen tells you your effort landed and that you’re valued, and it helps you do more of what works. You’re often generous with recognition for others, because you know how much it means. A job well done that nobody mentions can feel strangely unfinished.
What does recognition look like in practice?
- You make sure your name is on the work you led, even when it goes out in a team update.
- You thank people publicly and specifically when they’ve helped you.
- You notice when a manager remembers what you did, and when they don’t.
- You enter your work for an award or share it where peers will see it.
- You tell your partner when you’d like them to notice something you’ve done.
When is recognition overplayed?
Too much focus on recognition makes other people’s reactions the main measure of your worth. You may chase work that gets noticed over work that matters, feel slighted by small omissions, or struggle when doing the right thing goes unseen. The mature form asks for recognition directly when it’s fair, gives it freely, and keeps a sense of the value of your work that holds up without applause. One small habit that helps: keep a private note of good work nobody else saw, and read it back at the end of each month.

Recognition vs Status
Status is your standing and position relative to others. Recognition is acknowledgement of specific things you’ve done.
Recognition vs Reputation
Reputation is what people generally think of you over time. Recognition is being seen and thanked for particular contributions, often in the moment.

Significance is the sense that you matter. Recognition is one way of hearing it from others, and significance can also come from within.
Questions to sit with
- Whose recognition matters most to you, and what would happen if it never came?
- What good work have you done recently that nobody knows about? How does that sit with you?
- When did you last ask directly for acknowledgement, and what happened?
