What does elegance mean as a core value?
Elegance as a core value means looking for the simplest, most graceful way to do something, in work, design or behaviour, with nothing unnecessary added.
The best solution, to you, is the one with nothing left to remove. Elegance is graceful simplicity: the proof that takes five lines, the outfit without fuss, the apology that says exactly enough. It shows in how things move as well as how they look, and it tends to feel effortless even when a lot of work went into it. You’re drawn to economy and poise, and clumsiness or clutter, in design or behaviour, jars with you.
What does elegance look like in practice?
- You cut a paragraph from an email because the message works without it.
- You look for the one change that solves three problems at once.
- You handle a tense conversation calmly and without drama.
- You choose a simple, well-cut outfit over something louder.
- You redesign a process so it has fewer steps and fewer rules.
When is elegance overplayed?
Elegance can become a reluctance to deal with mess. Some problems are complicated, and forcing a clean answer on them hides what’s really going on. You may dismiss ideas that aren’t polished yet, or people whose way of working is less graceful than yours. It can also slow you down while you search for the perfect simple solution when a clumsy one would do. Healthy elegance is patient with the mess on the way to simplicity. Try sharing one piece of work this week while it’s still rough, and notice what the feedback adds.
